Just can’t seem to hit your macros anymore? Here’s what to do.

woman with head in hands, feeling frustrated by counting macros

If you’ve been tracking macros for a while, there’s bound to come a time where you just feel burned out. Maybe you just can’t bring yourself to hit those numbers anymore, though you’re not sure why… and you can’t help feeling frustrated (and maybe a little lost).

So what do you do when you’re having trouble hitting your numbers?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Set goals for protein and overall calories only.

Rather than tracking all three macros (protein, carbs, and fat), it’s like taking a tiny step back. It gives you a bit more flexibility with your carbs and fats, while still staying somewhat on track. This will also give you more information on which macros you lean towards naturally, and then you can adjust your goals accordingly while you work to regain consistency.

  • Reflect on your past week.

Think about the meals (or days) where you were the most “off-track.” How were your decisions different from decisions you would’ve made in the past (i.e., before focusing on nutrition)? Are there any improvements you can celebrate? On the other hand, is there anything you might change the next time you’re in a similar situation?

  • Revisit your “why.”

How strong is your reason for continued commitment to your nutrition plan? How can you reconnect with your “why” and put it at the forefront of your decision-making? And you may even want to consider if your original “why” is still relevant. Sometimes we set goals that don’t align with what we really want, because we think we should - when perhaps what we want can be achieved without chiseled abs.

  • If none of that works - just take a break.

Our tools are only good as long as they’re working for us. It’s always okay to take a step back and take a week (or more!) off from tracking food entirely. This full pause allows you to come back feeling refreshed and re-motivated. That, or you can find a different strategy that works better for you in this season of life.

At the end of the day, our goal is not to miss out on life so that we hit our macros. Our goal is to be consistent enough that we are able to enjoy life’s moments - free from guilt or shame. But if tracking macros is a strategy that can help you get there, we hope that implementing these strategies can help you get back to it!
